NSE holiday list 2026: every trading holiday, Muhurat trading and the expiry shifts
NSE's full 2026 holiday list from its official circulars: 16 weekday trading holidays, 4 weekend holidays, the Diwali Muhurat trading session on 8 November, and how Tuesday holidays shift F&O expiry.

All NSE trading holidays in 2026
NSE fixes its trading holidays for each calendar year through circulars issued separately for the Capital Market segment and the Futures and Options segment. For 2026, circular NSE/CMTR/71775, dated 12 December 2025, lists the equity holidays, and circular NSE/FAOP/71777, dated the same day, lists an identical set of dates for derivatives. Both circulars name 15 weekday holidays running from 26 January to 25 December, plus four more dates that already fall on a Saturday or Sunday.
A second pair of circulars added one more weekday holiday after the original notice went out. Circular NSE/CMTR/72260 for equities and circular NSE/FAOP/72262 for derivatives, both dated 12 January 2026, notified Thursday, 15 January 2026, as a trading holiday on account of the Municipal Corporation Election in Maharashtra, amending the December circulars. That addition brings the count to 16 weekday trading holidays for 2026.
NSE's own holiday data feed backs up the circulars. Queried directly, it lists 20 rows for the Capital Market segment and 20 rows for the Futures and Options segment for 2026, and the two lists match on every date and every holiday name, confirming that equity and derivatives trading pause on the same days.
Holidays that fall on a weekend in 2026
Four of NSE's 2026 holidays land on a day the market is shut anyway. Mahashivratri falls on Sunday, 15 February 2026, Id-Ul-Fitr on Saturday, 21 March 2026, Independence Day on Saturday, 15 August 2026, and Diwali Laxmi Pujan on Sunday, 8 November 2026. Because NSE does not trade on Saturdays or Sundays in the first place, none of these four dates removes an extra trading day from the 2026 calendar the way the 16 weekday holidays do.
Diwali Laxmi Pujan is the exception worth flagging on its own. NSE's circular carries a footnote saying Muhurat trading will be conducted on that Sunday, 8 November 2026, so the exchange opens for a special session on a day it would otherwise stay shut. Holidays still ahead after 28 September 2026
The next trading holiday after 28 September 2026 is 2 October 2026, a Friday, marked as Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti in both the equity and derivatives circulars.
20 October 2026, a Tuesday, is Dussehra, closing NSE's Capital Market and Futures and Options segments for the day.
10 November 2026, a Tuesday, is listed as Diwali-Balipratipada, falling two days after the Sunday Muhurat trading session.
24 November 2026, a Tuesday, is Prakash Gurpurb Sri Guru Nanak Dev.
25 December 2026, a Friday, is Christmas, the last of the 16 weekday trading holidays on NSE's 2026 calendar.
What the Tuesday holidays do to F&O expiry
NIFTY contracts used to fall due on Thursday, whether it was a weekly contract or the last session of an expiry month. NSE changed that through circular NSE/FAOP/68747, dated 25 June 2025. For contracts expiring on or after 1 September 2025, the weekly NIFTY series expires on Tuesday of the week, and the monthly, quarterly and half yearly series expire on the last Tuesday of the month.
That change means a trading holiday landing on a Tuesday now sits directly on what would otherwise be an expiry day. The circular's own annexure carries a plain caveat on this point: dates may be subject to change on account of any holiday declared.
NSE's published contract data, fetched on 28 September 2026, shows this playing out. The NIFTY expiry list includes 19 October 2026, a Monday, in place of Tuesday, 20 October 2026, the date Dussehra closes the market. It likewise includes 23 November 2026, a Monday, in place of Tuesday, 24 November 2026, the Prakash Gurpurb holiday, and the same 23 November date appears in BANKNIFTY's own contract list.
The same fetch has a gap worth naming rather than guessing at. NSE's NIFTY expiry list jumps straight from 3 November 2026 to 23 November 2026, with no separate entry yet for the week that contains the 10 November holiday. Until NSE publishes that contract, how the exchange will adjust that week's expiry is not something this page can state.
Muhurat trading 2026
NSE's circular NSE/CMTR/71775 states, in a footnote to the holiday table, that Muhurat trading will be conducted on Sunday, 8 November 2026, and that the timings of Muhurat trading will be notified subsequently.
Muhurat trading is the special session NSE marks against Diwali Laxmi Pujan in its holiday circular. In 2026 that date is a Sunday, a day the market would otherwise stay shut. As of 28 September 2026, a search of NSE's circulars issued between 1 September 2026 and that date turned up none with Muhurat or holiday in the subject line, so the exchange had not yet published the exact timings for the 8 November session.
