How NSE picks the Nifty 50

NSE Indices' equity index methodology document defines the Nifty 50 as an index that represents 50 companies selected from the universe of Nifty 100 based on free float market capitalisation and liquid companies having an average impact cost of 0.50% or less for 90% of the observations for a basket size of Rs. 10 Crores, and it states that the constituents should have derivative contracts available on NSE. The Nifty 50 factsheet describes the same F&O rule in plainer language: 'Companies that are allowed to trade in F&O segment are only eligible to be constituent of the index.'

The review happens on a semi-annual basis. The methodology document says the review of broad market indices is undertaken semi-annually based on data for six months ending January and July, and the factsheet gives the exact cut-off dates as January 31 and July 31 of each year, with four weeks' prior notice given to the market before a scheduled change takes effect. For the Nifty 50 specifically, the methodology document's replacement rule is that a security is included when it meets the impact cost criteria and its free float market capitalisation is at least 1.5 times that of the smallest existing Nifty 50 constituent, and a security is excluded when a better security becomes available in the replacement pool that meets the inclusion criteria. The maximum number of replacements allowed per review is 5, though this cap does not apply to an exclusion caused by a company failing minimum eligibility, its removal from the parent index, or a corporate event such as a merger, demerger, delisting, or trading suspension.

Review changes to the Nifty 50

NSE Indices' press release dated August 10, 2026 sets out the replacements from its semi-annual review of broad market indices, effective from September 30, 2026 (close of September 29, 2026). Wipro is excluded from the Nifty 50 and BSE Ltd. is included. The press release gives the reason in terms of the 1.5 times rule: BSE Ltd.'s average free-float market capitalisation of Rs. 1,40,879 crores is at least 1.5 times that of the smallest constituent, Wipro, at Rs. 55,930 crores. The lists above show the index as it stands on 28 September 2026. NSE Indices' Nifty 500 constituent file labels BSE Ltd. as Financial Services, so from 30 September 2026 that group has 12 companies and Information Technology has 4.

The last review change already in effect came through Download Ref No. NSE/FAOP/69835, dated August 25, 2025, which refers to an NSE Indices press release dated August 22, 2025. The change took effect from September 30, 2025 (close of September 29, 2025): Hero MotoCorp and IndusInd Bank were excluded from the Nifty 50, and InterGlobe Aviation and Max Healthcare Institute were included. Both InterGlobe Aviation Ltd. and Max Healthcare Institute Ltd. appear in the Nifty 50 constituent file fetched for this page, and neither Hero MotoCorp nor IndusInd Bank does. The next review circular, NSE/FAOP/72971 dated February 24, 2026, changed the Nifty Next 50, Nifty Midcap Select and Nifty Financial Services indices but not the Nifty 50.

NSE also publishes circulars titled 'Change in the Constituents of Indices' for other Nifty indices, and not every one of them touches the Nifty 50. The most recent such circular, Download Ref No. NSE/FAOP/76283, dated September 10, 2026, changed only the Nifty FPI 150 index, excluding Swiggy and including Union Bank of India; it left the Nifty 50 unchanged. NSE Indices' methodology also allows additional reconstitution between reviews when a constituent goes through a merger, demerger, delisting or a similar event, so the constituent file, not this history, is the record of current membership.

NSE Indices' Nifty 50 factsheet, dated August 31, 2026, breaks the index down by sector weight, a grouping similar to the constituent file's industry labels but not always worded identically (the factsheet says 'Oil, Gas & Consumable Fuels' where the constituent file says 'Oil Gas & Consumable Fuels', for example). On that date, Financial Services carried a weight of 36.47%, the largest of the 15 sectors the factsheet lists, followed by Oil, Gas & Consumable Fuels at 9.52% and Information Technology at 8.48%.

How to use this list

The factsheet states the index's purpose directly: 'Nifty 50 can be used for a variety of purposes such as benchmarking fund portfolios, launching of index funds, ETFs and structured products.' The list on this page is the Nifty 50 membership as published in NSE Indices' official constituent file, fetched for this page on 28 September 2026. Index funds and exchange-traded funds that track the Nifty 50 hold these 50 companies, and the membership shown here changes only at a semi-annual review, or sooner for a corporate event such as a merger, demerger, delisting, or trading suspension.
