How NSE Indices builds and caps the Nifty Bank

The Nifty Bank factsheet states that the index comprises a maximum of 14 companies listed on the National Stock Exchange, all forming part of the Banking sector, computed using the free float market capitalisation method. To be eligible, a company must be part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review, form part of the Banking sector, have a trading frequency of at least 90% in the preceding six months, and have a minimum listing history of one month as of the cut-off date. Preference is given to companies allowed to trade in the futures and options segment, and the final 14 are selected by free float market capitalisation.

On weight, NSE Indices' methodology document states that in the case of the Nifty Bank index, the weight of the top 3 stocks is capped at 19%, 14%, and 10% respectively, that the weight of the other stocks stays lower than those higher weighted constituents, and that the cumulative weight of stocks not available for trading in futures and options is capped at 10%, with each such stock individually capped at 4.5%. The index is reviewed on a semi-annual basis, with cut-off dates of January 31 and July 31 each year and four weeks' prior notice before a scheduled change takes effect.
