Opening Move: the fifteen-minute frame for the Tue 12 May 2026 cash open

The pre-open SGX read, the India VIX print, and the names already moving in the grey-market window.

The tape walks into Tuesday with a flat overnight handover and a thin SGX premium, so structure trumps direction at 09:15.

US closed Monday mixed, with the Dow holding small gains and the Nasdaq drifting after another round of softer-than-expected Treasury auction demand. The Dollar Index sat near the 104 handle, Brent hovered in the low 80s, and the US 10Y yield held above 4.3 percent. Asia opened soft, with the Nikkei flat and Hang Seng leaking in the first hour. No clean lead from any single overnight desk.

Pre-open SGX read

SGX Nifty is quoting a thin premium of roughly 20 to 30 points to the Friday Nifty cash close, which translates to a flat to mildly positive open rather than a directional gap. India VIX is sitting near the 12.4 handle, which is the comfort zone the writers have lived inside for most of April and the first week of May. A 12.4 VIX into a flat SGX print is the textbook setup for an open that pins inside the prior day's range for the first thirty minutes. The weekly option chain shows the heaviest call writing at the 24500 strike and put writing building at 24200, which frames a tight 300-point band the index has to break for any real intraday trend. Bank Nifty's pre-open OI looks heavier on the put side near 53000, suggesting the financials writers are more confident defending downside than the index writers are. Expect a quiet first print.

Names on the radar

RELIANCE is on watch after the weekend commentary around the retail demerger timeline, with the counter having seen sustained delivery-based buying through the prior week's close. Any pre-open block on the tape here sets the Nifty heavyweight tone for the first hour.

BHARTIARTL stays in the radar after the latest tariff hike commentary from the sector. The stock has been making higher lows on the daily for three weeks, and OI in the May series has been building on the long side. A clean open above the prior day's high opens the next leg.

INFY and TCS both go into the session under the IT sector overhang from the soft Nasdaq close and the rupee holding near 83.40 to the dollar. The writers have been defending IT calls for two weeks. Watch whether the pre-open delivery prints come in as accumulation or distribution.

COALINDIA is the rotation name to track. Power and metals rotated hard in the last hour of Friday's session, and Coal India's OI added on the long side into the close. A gap-up open here is the signal that the PSU energy basket wants to run.

HAL and BEL sit on the defence radar after the latest order-book commentary from the sector. Both names have been consolidating in tight ranges for the last six sessions. A pre-open volume spike on either is the first read on whether the defence basket gets a fresh leg or stays range-bound through May expiry.

The 09:15 frame

The editorial desk reads the open as a fade-the-extreme setup rather than a chase-the-gap one. With SGX flat and VIX at 12.4, the first fifteen minutes should print inside Friday's range, with the writers at 24500 and 24200 defending both ends. The cleanest confirmation of a strong open is Bank Nifty leading Nifty in the first ten minutes, with HDFCBANK and ICICIBANK both holding above their prior day VWAP. If financials lead and IT participates even modestly, the index gets the room to test 24500 by mid-morning. The fade setup activates if the Nifty opens near 24450 and the first five-minute candle prints a clean upper wick on weak breadth. The downside frame stays clean only if 24200 breaks on volume, which the put writers will defend hard given the OI build. PSU energy and defence are the rotation candidates. IT is the funding sector. Mid-caps and small-caps come into the session with the broader market having outperformed the index for four straight sessions, so any first-hour weakness in the index should still see selective bid in the broader tape. Watch the advance-decline at 09:30.

The rest of the morning into the 09:30 Opening 15 debrief is about confirmation, not commitment. Track whether the Nifty holds above Friday's close on the first thirty-minute candle, whether Bank Nifty leads or lags, and whether the rupee opens stable against the dollar near 83.40. The defence basket and PSU energy are the two rotation reads to watch. If India VIX ticks below 12 in the first hour, the writers win the day and the range stays tight into the European open.
